Fierce Oceans

A sweet friend shared the following verse with me recently…and I keep running into it.

2 Timothy 1:7 (Amplified):  For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but {He has given us a spirit} of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control.

And this morning, as my little Leah sips apple juice and watches Tom & Jerry, I hear these lyrics play in my kitchen from the song “Devotion” by Hillsong:  When You speak, the fiercest of oceans is still…

Have you, or do you today, find yourself adrift in a fierce ocean?  Do you find yourself yearning for a calm and well-balanced mind?  Do you long for peace?  I don’t and won’t pretend to have all the answers.  What I do know is that when God speaks to your heart the pull of the tide and the crash of the waves can be stilled.  I do believe He gives us a spirit of power and of love because it is His Spirit living within us as Jesus-followers.

So often, when we are knocked around by the fierce forces of confusion and doubt, we can easily become so mired in it all that we don’t stop to listen and let Jesus speak to the “ocean” of our hearts.  So often we keep looking around and up and down for answers…we look for writing in the sky or we expect another person to give us answers.  I know there are times in our lives God, in His mercy, gives us the direction and answers we need through other believers or He seemingly plops what we need to hear in our laps through a particular speaker or sermon.  But you know what?  There are times when it’s not so easy.  Times when perhaps He is teaching and leading us and requiring we come to Him and find peace and direction apart from any external source or person.  Those can feel like desperate times!  Goodness, we can strain so hard to hear Him with hands clenched and timid hearts that we don’t hear at all!  We certainly can identify with the sinking surroundings of the fiercest of oceans…doubt and fear.

If you are at a crossroads…if you are weary from fighting the tug of the current…if your arms are tired from paddling to keep your head above the water…may I encourage you to lift your heavy arms up to Jesus?  May I encourage you to let go and listen?  It may not be the “answer” you hear about your circumstances right away…but you may hear and see something even more precious.  You may hear Jesus speak peace to your heart and experience the calming of your “fiercest of oceans.”

Today is a reminder, if you need it, that God means for us to know supernatural peace and He has the power to calm our hearts if we quiet down to hear Him.  Trust is learned when we lift our hands up to Him in the midst of the storm…letting go of our efforts and striving to hear answers.  Just hearing Him say nothing, nothing!, separates us from His love…
